How I Became a Web and Graphic Designer

My Early Days:

I have memories of being a creative kid, painting watercolour paintings on the floor of the kitchen and drawing sports figures and video game characters on Friday nights. It was in the 8th grade when I first got recognition for my artistic and design ability. In French class, our teacher gave us an assignment to design a cd cover for a fictional band. We got to name the band and the album. Before handing in the assignment, the teacher met with each student to see their work. I showed her my album cover and she held it up to the class as an example of good work. Up to that point, I hadn't been recognized for good work in school and it felt good to be recognized.

Being a high school student in the 90's, online fan culture was centered around creating fan websites. I created a fan website for a band that I liked at the time. This was the first time when the concept of design really mattered to me. I would look at other band's websites for design inspiration. I really cared about the layout, the fonts used, how to present photos and information about the band. This is where I started to learn HTML and after working on my fan website for a number of years, I received positive feedback when Rolling Stone magazine's website recognized my site as one of the top fan websites for the band. I was pleasantly surprised by this news, and I was able to use this recognition to land a summer job as Web Designer with my home town.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and Animation Diploma:

In high school, I saw a commercial for a computer animation program. It brought to me the possibility of becoming an animator and I focused my post secondary education on pursuing a job in the industry. In 2004, I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Ottawa. One major highlight, was being a finalist at the graduation art exhibition, which allowed me to present my artwork at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa during the graduation ceremonies for that year. After receiving my degree, I went on to pursue and receive a diploma in Digital Animation from Algonquin College, where I studied both traditional and computer animation. Upon graduating, unfortunately, I was unable to obtain a position in the animation industry.

From Animation to the E-Learning Industry:

During this set back in animation, I thought to myself, if I couldn't make it in animation, I wanted to work as Web Designer because I had a good experience as Web Designer working for my home town and I continuously created websites during my education for my artwork and I liked the process of design and was constantly looking at design inspiration. At that moment, I decided to pursue being a Web and Graphic Designer.

The setback ended when I got the opportunity to work as a designer for an E-Learning company where I worked for nine years. This experience broadened my design knowledge and was my first work experience in a design agency environment. It was also my first experience working with style guides and working in design teams and seeing other designer's process. It helped me develop my own design process by expanding base design elements to create up to 250 slides for an E-Learning course, continuing the look and feel of the original design that was provided to me. I also developed my own illustration style, video editing, motion design, interaction / layout design and programming skills. I learned the process of creating an online course from the early stages of a visual presentation design document, to storyboard, to wireframes, prototype, and finished product, ending with quality assurance of providing ongoing maintenance and support. Within the nine year period, I was given the opportunity to create over 75 E-Learning courses and training aids for Crown Corporations, Financial Institutions, Provincial and Federal Government Departments and Private Industry and was part of a team that won the Canadian Award for Training Excellence.

Expanding My Design Skills in the Public Service:

I learned a lot as a designer within the E-Learning industry but I wanted to grow as a Web and Graphic Designer. In 2018, I got the opportunity to expand my abilities to other projects outside of E-Learning with my position in the Public Service. Within the public service, I did work on a couple E-Learning projects but the primary projects I worked on were outside of E-Learning. This included creating over a thousand visual elements including individual illustrations, icons, and diagrams for communications products and SharePoint websites. It also included creating over 80 Infographics, and over 120 PowerPoint presentations that aligned with the department's templates and style guides. I also performed secondary reviews and updates of Microsoft Word documents, ensuring documents are not only visually appealing but also meet professional standards and accessibility requirements. I also designed email newsletters for three different teams and designed web banners, dashboards, job aids, forms, templates, brochures, team logos, Microsoft Teams backgrounds and a certificate of recognition in multiple styles for multiple years. Some of my work was presented to senior management based on its high quality and attention to detail.
